Irrigation accounts for 95 % of the total water
use in the Jordan Valley. The photo shows a plantation of field crops in the Wadi Fara region. Field crops need very high irrigation to account for the massive transpiration. On average, one hectare of field crops requires about 10.000 cubic meters of water per year. The economic productivity of this high water usage is no more than around 1 USD per cubic meter of water.
