Analysing Urban Systems by Remote Sensing

Project Leader: Dr. Klaus Steinnocher

Contracting Agency: Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research

Beginning: 01.2000

The project is part of the 3 year research programme “Complexity and Sustainability” and is based on our experiences in urban applications of remotely sensed data. Extending the work performed in a recently finished EU wide research programme that focussed on the analysis of the dynamic development of metropolitan areas (Monitoring Urban Dynamics – MURBANDY) this project aims at the synergistic use of remotely sensed and terrestrial data for monitoring land use characteristics. The results will contribute substantially to the modelling of land use processes as performed in the “Leitprojekt” and in the KLFII-project and represent an excellent link to the EU programme “City of tomorrow”.
Objective of the project is the mapping of land use patterns by means of remote sensing and its combination with statistical data for spatio-temporal analysis of land use development. In the course of the project the MURBANDY area of Vienna will be extended towards dynamic regions in the wider surroundings of Vienna. In addition methods will be developed to combine remotely sensed data with statistical information. One problem in modelling land use dynamics is its discontinuity due to changes of external parameters (caused by legislation, public administration, etc.) that does not allow a description by continuous functions. Remote sensing can help to monitor these changes and link them to the statistical data. The actual development can then be documented in a spatio-temporal context considering the external parameters.
The project comprises the first part of the three year research programme and will cover the following activities:

Selection and acquisition of satellite imagery
Geocoding of satellite imagery
Mapping the land use patterns by interpretation of satellite imagery
Establishing a consistent land use data base (complementing the MURBANDY data base)
Production of digital thematic land use maps for visualisation
Preparation of socio-demographic data sets for the area of investigation
